The land of the singing fish “Batticaloa”

Batticaloa is a major city in the Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, and its former capital. Batticaloa is a Portuguese derivation. The original Tamil name matakkalappu means muddy swamp.

Batticaloa is in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka on a flat coastal plain with the lagoon and the Indian Ocean on either side this is also home to one of the biggest lagoons in Sri Lanka. There are several islands within the Batticaloa Lagoon such as Puliayantheevu, Buffalo Island and Bone Island. Many bridges have been built across the lagoon to connect the main lands and the islands.

In the past, Batticaloa was a part of the Portuguese reigning region and that helped shape the modern culture of Batticaloa which still to this day has an effect so strong like leaving Sri Lankan Portuguese speakers.

Batticaloa is a coastal town with a coastline extending almost 4 Km. it has beautiful pristine beaches great for a swim, tan, walk, surf or even who can forget the infamous singing fish only found in Batticaloa. Some Monuments exist due to the long relationship held with the Portuguese like the famous fort.

Kalladi Beach Kalladi Beach

This is a huge beach with clean shores. Best time for a visit is in the morning or in the evening when you can see the sunrise or sunset. Waves are pretty rough which makes it a great place for surfing.

Lady Manning Bridge Lady Manning Bridge

Built in 1924 during British regiment by William manning in the honor of his wife. This is Sri Lanka’s oldest and longest Iron Bridge. Best times to visit is in the morning or in the evening and don’t forget to bring your camera.

Batticaloa Fort Batticaloa Fort

A defense fort built in by Portuguese solely from granite stones and coral the captured by the Dutch Dutch and then by the British. It’s protected by the lagoon on 2 sides and a manmade canal on the other two sides.
