The Island made by corals “Delft Island”

Delft Island is a pretty big island in the palk strait of northern Sri Lanka. It also known as Neduntheevu or Neduntivu in Tamil or more commonly known by its Dutch name Delft.

The island roughly oval shape 50sq. km island. It is almost absolutely flat with no relief features and it has shallow shores covering it from all sides. This island is probably composed of a once giant reef which has died because the soil is coralline and the shores are literally sand and corals fragments. This island has a semi-arid climate and the flora is exceptionally well equipped for it.

This island also features to a mind boggling 1000-year-old temple built during the Chola Dynasty as well as the ruins of a Dutch colonial fort. This island was said to be named after the Dutch city of Delft by Rijckloff van Goens. He named the eight most important islands after Dutch cities.
