The fisherman’s town “Kalpitiya”

Kalpitiya is located in puttalam district in the north western province of Sri Lanka. Its name probably came from the Tamil name Kalputti, stemming from the words kal meaning stone and putti meaning elevation.

Kalpitiya is basically 14 islands with a total land area of 16.73 sq. km. this is ab booming tourist attraction now. Due to its’ adventure factor and world class hotel service.

Kalpitiya is undoubtedly the best spot for kite surfing in the country. The summer kitesurfing season is from May to October during the south west monsoon while the winter season is from mid-December to mid-February during the north east monsoon. This spot is so well known that Kiteboard Tour Asia held a tour event in Kalpitiya once in 2017.

It is a marine sanctuary with a diversity of marine and terrestrial habitats ranging from bar reefs, flat coastal plains, saltpans, mangroves swamps, salt marshes and vast sand dune beaches. It is also one of the few places in Sri lanka where majestic sea mammals like dolphins, whales and the famous mermaid doppelganger who even fooled Columbus known as the sea cow can be spotted. And also other animals like sea turtles and crustaceans are also present in abundance.

Kalpitiya Fort Kalpitiya Fort

The Fort was built by the Dutch mainly to uplift trade in North West region of the Sri Lanka.The historical site is currently maintained by the Sri Lankan Navy. Prepare to be amazed by the concrete tunnels running underground.

Dutch Church Dutch Church

This is a small ancient church built by the Dutch in the 18th century. Special feature of this church is you can see a tombstone on the floor of the church. The original Dutch fort collapsed and it is currently reconstructed.
