A Bird watchers must visit “Kumana”

Kumana national park is located in the south east coast of Sri Lanka and is renowned for its special migratory and endemic bird varieties. This sanctuary for birds spans almost 35,664 Hectares and it is in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. It is nourished by the perennial Kumbukkan Oya and 20+ lagoons and tanks.

This park has a reputation for its avifauna in other words, BIRDS! Specially migratory birds who migrate from temperate climates to the warm tropical climates like the Eurasian hornbill and the purple heron and the endemic bird species exclusive to Sri Lanka like the Kahibella.

Even though it is famous as a bird sanctuary it is just as good in the wild animals department, it is a park filled with other animals like land and fresh water turtles, crocodiles, wild boar, sri Lankan leopards, elephants and many varieties of deer.
