Major city in the Southern Province “Matara”

Mathara is a major city in the southern province and it is the capital of Matara district of Sri Lanka. This was called ruhuna in the Mahavamsa.

Matara has a history of being its’ own separate kingdom with a long line of rulers, kings and queens. Then later in the 16 century it was over taken by Portuguese and then in the 18th century bythe dutch as a maritime district. Which makes it a great place to find foreign and local monuments all in one place.

Matara is a bustling commercial town that owes almost nothing to tourism which makes it a fascinating window on modern Sri Lankan life. Matara’s main attractions are its fortifications, Dutch architecture, a well-preserved fort and its ancient shrines.

Weharagena is an underground temple considerd one of the best in Matara. You can see many old painting and a recently built but still impressive statue of lord Buddha.

Polhena Beach Polhena Beach

This is a great snorkeling spot. You can see turtles and sting rays during season or you can grab an ice cream (or a few) and take a slow walk or take a dip in the cool waters.

Paravi Duwa Temple Paravi Duwa Temple

It is a temple built on the old Paravi Duva with a long over sea bridge leading to it, it’s a rather interesting experience for a temple.

Kushta Raja Gala Kushta Raja Gala

This is an amazing statue and set in a nice little park. a great stop on the way to somewhere else. A great place to stop relax and have a picnic.

Star Fort Star Fort

This is a lovely old Dutch colonial fort. Its relatively small and it has been renovated recently. There is a small museum inside.

Shrine of Our Lady of Matara Shrine of Our Lady of Matara

The famous venerated shrine sits facing the Matara beach. It was destroyed by the tsunami but now has been re built stronger than ever. It is said to be a miraculous church.
