The little Rome of Sri Lanka “Negombo’

Negombo is a major town on the west coast of Sri Lanka and it belongs the western province. It is a lagoon city with a big historic importance. Negombo has many names like the Sinhala name Meegamuwa which means Honeycomb Village, the Tamil name Neerkolombu which loosely translates to Colombo in water and the famous Dutch name Negombo.

Historically this was a famous lagoon because the shallow waters of the Negombo Lagoon provided safe shelter for sea vessels and became one of the key ports along with Kalpitiya, Puttalama, Colombo, Kalutara and Galle. this was also a town coveted by the Portuguese, dutch and the british for its cinnamon. Negombo is given the nickname “little rome” because two thirds of its population are true-blue Catholics. And also for its marvelous Vatican inspired church designs.

This is also a pretty big tade centre and is considered as one of the biggest economic centres in Sri Lanka. this also a a natural work of art with sandy beaches, long coastline, shallow lagoon and marshes where you can enjoy nature at its finest.

Dutch Fort and the Clock Tower Dutch Fort and the Clock Tower

The original fort was built by the Portuguese in 1640 but it was taken by the Dutch in 1672.This a large stone structure situated on small hill that used to house a giant bell but now it has been converted to a prison. There is also a beautiful clock tower right on the site.

Angurukaramulla Temple Angurukaramulla Temple

This is the oldest Temple close to Negombo town and pilgrimage destination for Buddhists. It is about a 100 years old. There is also huge Buddha statue and many other significant things to worshipped.

Muthurajawela Marsh Muthurajawela Marsh

The Dutch Canal The Dutch Canal

The Hamilton Canal connecting Puttalam to Colombo, passing through Negombo in Sri Lanka. The canal was constructed by the British in 1802 and completed in 1804.
