Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is located in Kegalle of Sbaragamu Province and it is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for injured and orphan elephants.
The orphanage was established to feed, nurse and house baby elephants found abandoned by their mothers and also to save the lives of injured elephants who were found fallen into pits, shot or disabled.
The elephants have a special daily routine with specific feeding times, bathing times and walking times and if you’re lucky to get there by 10am, you might be able to see these majestic creatures have a bath in the river close by. To be real, they look just like giant rocks floating in the river when they’re taking a bath.
You can also feed the baby elephants and the adult elephants and have a close look and pet the elephants when you visit this fine establishment. Even though the elephants are in chains, it’s for the good of all as an elephant is a large animal who turns into a giant wrecking ball if lost control and can be fatal to itself and to the people around. So be extra careful when associating with these beasts.
