Bear town “Wasgamuwa”

Wasgamuwa national park is located in Matale and Polonnaruwa Districts of Sri Lanka and is famous for its vast elephant herds and its bears. This sanctuary for birds spans almost 39322 Hectares and it is in the dry zone of Sri Lanka.

This park has a reputation for its huge herds of elephants and its bears. It is also home to a herd of marsh elephants estimated about 200 elephants and it’s a special home to the extremely endangered Srilankan Sloth which is a subspecies of sloth of population only 1000 individuals.

Even though it is famous as an elephant park there are other mammals like the purple-faced langur, the toque macaque whom are endemic ,water buffalo and Sri Lankan axis deer whom are common and the Sri Lanka leopard, the sloth bear and the Small golden palm civet of whom are rare endemic species, bird varieties like the endemic red-faced malkoha and the Sri Lanka jungle fowl, reptiles like the Water monitor, the mugger crocodile, the Skink and 3 endemic lizards and 50 butterfly species of which 4 are endemic.
